Machines have a soul, too
When it comes to cars (or at least for one of the creators of this newsletter, so I’ll continue writing in the first person), they hardly exist for me as practical tools. Sure, I use them daily, but what truly matters to me flies in the face of making cars accessible for the masses. Things like trunk size, fuel efficiency, eco-friendly materials inside, or multimedia systems that mimic my computer or phone – these are all irrelevant. After all, I’m trying to escape from those screens when I get behind the wheel! What really counts are the emotions, the sensations, the smell – both inside and out – and the feeling that the designers are at least a little bit passionate about cars.
This prelude sets the stage for today’s edition of Slow Letter by Slow Escape. I believe – though it’s not a particularly original thought – that every year, we lose more and more of those qualities in the automotive world. As a result, it’s time to pause and start looking back at what we had. For many, classic cars mean a Ford Model T, for others, an Aston Martin DB9 or the first BMW M3. But truthfully, we can already consider the previous generation Porsche 911 a classic. Despite its relatively modern looks, it’s an analog, mechanical marvel, fascinating in its precision. But let’s think… What else makes classic cars, like the Old Money style, increasingly popular?
One of the strongest reasons we love classic cars so much is nostalgia. Memories of childhood, when our parents or grandparents drove these cars, forge strong emotional bonds. For many, classics recall a time when life seemed simpler, and cars were symbols of freedom and adventure. Spotting a vintage Mustang or Porsche 911 on the road can transport us back in time, reminding us of an era when driving was full of romance and the spirit of discovery.
Classic cars are often seen as rolling works of art. Designs from the 1950s, 60s, and 70s were crafted in an era when design played a crucial role, with every line and curve carefully considered. You wouldn’t find meddling accountants or endless EU regulations back then. Today, when most modern cars are designed with aerodynamics, safety, and efficiency in mind, classics stand out with their unique charm and beauty. The Jaguar E-Type, Ferrari 250 GTO, or Mercedes-Benz 300 SL are examples of cars that have achieved icon status, not just for their performance but also for their unmatched design.
Craftsmanship and Mechanics
Another aspect that draws enthusiasts to classic cars is the craftsmanship and mechanics. In the era before automation and robotics, cars were assembled by hand, with attention to every detail. The mechanics were simple, yet complex in their own way. Engines, gearboxes, suspensions – everything was designed for maximum durability and quality. Today, in a world of computers and electronic assistance systems, classic cars offer an authentic driving experience, where the driver feels every movement, every vibration, and has complete control over the machine. It’s an experience that can’t be fully described until you’ve lived it.
Rarity and Exclusivity
As time goes on, classic cars become increasingly rare, only adding to their allure. In today’s world of mass production, where almost every model is within easy reach, owning a classic car becomes synonymous with exclusivity. It’s not easy to find a well-preserved example, and when you do, it becomes an object of envy and admiration. Each classic car has its own story, and its owner becomes the guardian of that history, ensuring the machine survives for future generations. For many, it’s also a fantastic investment. The value of many models rises year after year, making them an attractive alternative to traditional forms of investment. Investing in classic cars not only allows you to enjoy them daily but can also bring tangible financial benefits in the future. A prime example is the rankings from one of the leading classic car portals, which regularly highlights collectible cars worth investing in.
It’s incredibly gratifying to see these cars making their way into pop culture and the creative industry. Honestly, I frequently come across materials where classics play a crucial role in the narrative. Just take a look at the Instagram of the world’s most popular model, Kendall Jenner, and you’ll spot a classic Porsche 911 of the 993 generation or the first Range Rover.
Creative people love to weave exceptional cars into their stories – cars that we can no longer buy new.
As you can see, we’re not alone in this. Moreover, classic car enthusiasts form a unique community that shares its passion at numerous rallies, car shows, and gatherings. It’s not just about showcasing their machines but also about forging friendships with those who share the same love for automobiles. Classic motoring is also a culture that encompasses everything from fashion to music to lifestyle, making it more than just a hobby for many people. If you search carefully, you’ll find a community around almost every classic car. Who knows, you might stumble upon a story as amazing as that of the Ferrari 166 Inter, the world’s longest-running Ferrari.
Conclusion
The love for classic cars is a blend of nostalgia, aesthetics, mechanics, exclusivity, and the experiences these vehicles offer. Anyone who has had the chance to sit behind the wheel of a classic car knows it’s a feeling incomparable to driving any modern vehicle. It’s these emotions, memories, and passions that continue to attract fans worldwide, with their value – both material and emotional – constantly on the rise. Classic motoring is a tribute to bygone eras, but it’s also a testament to timeless beauty and engineering genius that has stood the test of time.
