Beyond the bucket list: 4 underrated destinations for 2024
Sumba, Indonesia
Just an hour’s flight from Bali lies Sumba, an island around twice its size but worlds apart in experience. Sumba is emerging as a perfect antidote to Bali’s crowds. With its remote villages, ancient rituals, and world-class surf breaks, it offers a unique blend of luxury and authenticity. Don’t miss the chance to stay at eco-resorts like Nihi Sumba or witness the iconic Pasola festival, a thrilling demonstration of horsemanship and local tradition. And check out this article for even more tips.
Galicia, Spain
Forget the crowded beaches of the Costa del Sol. Galicia, in Spain’s northwest, offers a different kind of coastal beauty. According to CNN Travel, Galicia boasts some of Spain’s most breathtaking beaches, mouth-watering seafood, and a historic city forever entwined with the famed Camino de Santiago. Explore the stunning Rías Baixas, known for its picturesque coastal inlets and excellent Albariño wines, or lose yourself in the narrow streets of coastal towns like Combarro. Keep reading for more, as we’ll focus on Galicia further in this issue.
Maunabo, Puerto Rico
While San Juan gets all the attention, Maunabo in southeastern Puerto Rico offers a slice of Caribbean paradise without the crowds. Forbes highlights Maunabo as a fast-growing vacation spot for 2024. Home to the Punta Tuna Wetlands Nature Reserve and a historic lighthouse built by the Spanish in 1892, it’s perfect for nature lovers and history buffs alike. Immerse yourself in local culture, enjoy pristine beaches, and savor authentic Puerto Rican cuisine.
Macedonia, Greece
Step off the well-trodden Greek tourist trail and discover Macedonia. Vogue’s travel experts note that this northern region is relatively free from overtourism. It boasts archaeological sites like the tomb of Philip II (father of Alexander the Great) in Vergina, Byzantine remains in the hilltop city of Veria, and superb wineries in the rolling hills around Naousa. With fewer crowds than the islands or Athens, you’ll have space to soak in the rich history and warm Greek hospitality.
Spotlight on Galicia
Let’s take a closer look at Galicia, Spain’s green corner. Often overlooked in favor of more famous Spanish destinations, Galicia offers a unique blend of Celtic and Spanish cultures, reflected in its music, language, and traditions. The Galician language itself, Galego, is closely related to Portuguese and further emphasizes the region's unique cultural heritage.
Santiago de Compostela
Home to the stunning 12th-century cathedral (which supposedly houses the remains of the apostle St. James), and endpoint of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage. The old town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a maze of narrow streets and squares, each with its own story to tell. The Praza do Obradoiro, the main square, is a perfect spot to watch pilgrims arrive and celebrate their journey’s end.
Rías Baixas
This coastal region is known for its deep, fjord-like inlets and excellent Albariño wines. The towns of Cambados and O Grove are particularly worth visiting for their charming old quarters and seafood restaurants. The region is also renowned for its fresh seafood, especially shellfish. Also, don’t miss the chance to take a boat trip to the Cíes Islands, often referred to as the “Galician Caribbean” for their pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters.
Cabo Fisterra
Once believed to be the end of the world by the Romans (and many other ancient cultures), this cape offers spectacular views of the Atlantic. The lighthouse, built in 1853, is still in use today. Many pilgrims continue their journey from Santiago to Fisterra, considering it the true end of their Camino.
A Coruña
This vibrant coastal city (and major port) boasts the UNESCO-protected Tower of Hercules, the world’s oldest surviving Roman lighthouse still in use (built in the 1st century!). The city is known for its glass-enclosed balconies, called galerías, which give it the nickname “The Crystal City”. The city’s gastronomic scene is thriving, with excellent seafood restaurants and traditional taverns. The Paseo Marítimo, one of the longest promenades in Europe, offers beautiful views of the bay.
Galician cuisine is a seafood lover’s paradise. Don’t miss pulpo á feira (octopus with paprika), percebes (goose barnacles), or the region’s famous empanadas. This region is also famous for its cheeses, particularly the cow’s milk cheese Tetilla. Other important dishes include Caldo Galego (Galician broth) and Lacón con Grelos (pork shoulder with turnip greens). Galicia’s climate is oceanic, characterized by mild temperatures and abundant rainfall, which certainly contributes to its lush green landscape.
Tips for planning your off-the-beaten-path adventure
Research thoroughly:
Less touristy destinations often have less information available online. Invest time in reading travel blogs, local guides, and forums to gather insights from those who have visited before you.
Learn basic local phrases:
In off-the-beaten-path locations, English may not be widely spoken. Learning a few key phrases in the local language can greatly enhance your experience and show respect for the local culture.
Be flexible:
Smaller destinations may have less developed tourist infrastructure. Embrace the adventure and be prepared for changes in plans. In the end, sometimes the unexpected detours lead to the most memorable experiences.
Support local businesses:
Seek out locally-owned accommodations, restaurants, and tour operators. This ensures your visit benefits the local community and provides you with more authentic experiences.
Respect local customs:
Take time to understand and respect local traditions and etiquette. This will enrich your experience and show respect for your hosts. Be mindful of dress codes, especially when visiting religious sites.
Travel sustainably:
As highlighted in HIP Hotels’ article, 2024 is seeing a shift towards eco-friendly accommodations and community-centric tourism. Choose accommodations and activities that prioritize sustainability whenever you can.
Remember, the joy of discovering hidden gems lies in the unexpected. Stay open to new experiences, and you’ll find that the road less traveled often leads to the most rewarding destinations.
Safe travels!
