Food for thought
✻ 2024 started as hottest ever, following 2023’s unprecedented warmth. In fact, each month since June 2023 has set new temperature records. Scientists predict 2024 could surpass last year’s extreme heat, potentially becoming the warmest year on record.
See it for yourself on this up to date global heat map.
✻ Heat might not seem like a deadly threat, but it really is. Researchers found that heatwaves cause over 150,000 deaths annually, accounting for 1% of global deaths.
✻ Making plans for the upcoming vacation? You might want to reconsider India, Saudi Arabia and Egypt or even parts of Greece, as the heat toll is on the rise there.
✻ Heatwaves can disrupt sleep, but experts offer some solutions. Check them out.
✻ But there’s not only bad news, because NASA’s Voyager 1 spacecraft is back to conducting normal science operations for the first time since the technical issue that arose in November 2023, partially resolved in April (we wrote about it in our issue #018), but now all four instruments are returning usable science data. We’re so back.
✻ Bugatti has shown a new car. Tourbillon is a V16 hypercar designed to last for eternity.

The dream of simple living
In a world dominated by constant connectivity, endless notifications, and the relentless pursuit of more, the concept of simple living has become an increasingly alluring dream for many. As our lives become ever more intertwined with technology and social media, the idea of stepping back and embracing a simpler, more intentional way of life has gained significant traction. Simple living isn’t about deprivation or isolation. Rather, it’s about consciously choosing to focus on what truly matters, eliminating the unnecessary, and finding contentment in the present moment. This lifestyle can lead to reduced stress, increased happiness, and a deeper connection with ourselves and the world around us. For those feeling overwhelmed by the constant barrage of information and stimuli in our digital age, simple living offers a refreshing alternative. It’s about creating space – both physical and mental – to breathe, think, and live more deliberately. And, as we already wrote in our issue #006, slow life means good life.
Sources of inspiration
If you’re intrigued by the concept of simple living, there are numerous sources of inspiration available. One excellent resource is “Zen: The Art of Simple Living” by Shunmyo Masuno. This beautifully illustrated hardcover book offers 100 daily practices drawn from Zen Buddhism to help cultivate a more mindful, contented life. Masuno, a Zen Buddhist priest, provides practical wisdom on how to incorporate simplicity and mindfulness into our everyday routines, from how we eat to how we work and interact with others. The book serves as a gentle guide, encouraging readers to find moments of tranquility and purpose in their daily lives, even amidst the chaos of modern existence. You’ll find it on Amazon here, and of course on any other platforms.
For those who prefer visual inspiration, YouTube offers a wealth of content centered around simple living. One channel that stands out to us is that of Martijn Doolaard. Doolaard documents his journey of renovating a house in the Alps, showcasing a life stripped down to the essentials. Watching his videos, one can’t help but feel a pull towards a simpler existence, away from the hustle and bustle of city life. The serene mountain landscapes and the satisfaction of working with one’s hands make it tempting to consider dropping everything and starting anew in a similar setting. Doolaard’s content serves as a reminder that there are alternative ways to live, ones that prioritize connection with nature, self-sufficiency, and the joy of creating something with your own hands. Just watch some of his videos and try not to feel the urge to start a simpler life somewhere else, we dare you. And if you need even more inspiration, check out the simple living subreddit.
Technology for simplicity?
While it might seem counterintuitive, certain technologies can actually aid in the pursuit of a simpler life. One such innovation is the Light Phone III, a minimalist smartphone designed to help users disconnect from the digital world while still maintaining essential communication. The Light Phone III is built around the concept of “going light” – providing only the most necessary functions without the distractions of social media, internet browsing, or addictive apps. With its simple black and white interface and limited feature set, it encourages users to spend less time staring at screens and more time engaging with the world around them.
The phone includes basic functions like calling and texting, along with simple tools such as a calculator and alarm. It also features an intentionally designed camera that encourages thoughtful photo-taking, rather than constant documentation of every moment. By eliminating the constant temptation to check notifications or scroll through social media, the Light Phone III can be a powerful tool for those looking to simplify their digital lives, allowing users to stay connected when necessary without being tethered to the digital world.
For those who simply cannot imagine living without a normal smartphone, turning on the black and white color filter will be a great starting point. It removes some of the fun of using our bright and colorful displays and makes us less interested in them. Here’s how to do it on an iPhone. Give it a try!
Tips towards a simpler life
Embracing a simpler life doesn’t require a drastic overhaul of your entire existence. Small, intentional changes can make a significant difference:
Start by decluttering your space – a tidy, organized environment can lead to a clearer mind.
Consider limiting digital distractions, whether through special tools like the Light Phone III or simply by setting boundaries around your technology use.
Incorporate mindfulness practices into your daily routine, even if it’s just a few minutes of meditation or deep breathing each day.
Learn to simplify your schedule by saying no to commitments that don’t align with your priorities, and make time to connect with nature regularly.
Embrace the concept of slow living by taking time to savor experiences, whether it’s enjoying a meal or having a meaningful conversation with a friend.
Shift your focus from accumulating possessions to creating memorable experiences.
It’s important to remember that simple living is a journey, not a destination. It’s about making conscious choices each day to live more intentionally and focus on what truly matters. While we may not all be able to renovate a house in the Italian Alps like Martijn Doolaard, we can all take steps to simplify our lives and find more peace and contentment in our daily existence. So, as you embark on your journey towards a simpler life, be patient with yourself. Any change takes time, and it’s okay to start small. And, as we mentioned in the issue #004, good things take time. The key is to remain mindful of your choices and continually reassess what adds value to your life.
In a world that often seems to value complexity and constant stimulation, choosing simplicity can be a radical act. But for many, it’s a path that leads to greater fulfillment, deeper connections, and a more meaningful life. Whether it’s through reading inspirational books, finding motivation in others’ journeys, or utilizing various tools, there are numerous ways to begin your own simple living adventure. So why not take that first step today? Your simpler, more intentional life is waiting.
